Other Recent Drawings

Here are some more drawings from the past few weeks. I’ve been practicing with a few different types of fine-line pens – Also working on improving my process for scanning and coloring inked drawings digitally.

Also got a kitten – he’s been helping out

First Post of 2015

I’ve been pretty busy so far this new year – and despite having not posted here in a bit I’ve done some work in the meantime that I’m pretty pleased with. To start off – here’s a project I did this past weekend. I have an appreciation for the permanence of nature, in comparison to our own endeavors – and I enjoy exploring the idea that a single setting can serve as an anchor for an unlimited number of events and stories across a broad span of time. IMG_0721 I began by dividing my sketchbook page into 12 square panels, and repeated the same landscape in each – with minor changes as time goes on. Through Time Process 1 Through Time Process 2 I needed a “base” image to duplicate each time – here is the sketch and final base landscape. Below are two of the varied scenes in detail: Process 4 Process 5 And here is the finished product – 12 scenes spanning roughly 20,000 years: Through Time Final PNG -Taylor

  • some others – I believe I’ve seen a quite a bit of improvement over some of the things I was doing a year ago. As I’ve said before I’m enjoying the results of relaxing my linework slightly, aiming for less rigidity and precision in these sketches. Particularly in the appearance of the rock and stone in these sketches – the lines were put down very quickly and naturally, and it’s not something I would have produced a year back.

  • this being said, there are still a number of very fundamental skills I’m looking to improve upon – as well as focusing on breaking further out of my comfort zone in terms of subject matter

More Inktober

Here are my two most recent drawings for inktober. Quickly colored them again, pretty happy with how the second one turned out. Might try to set up a page where you can look at all the inktober drawings so far in the same spot. These have been fun to do so far – I’m feeling more confident with the inking lately, less worried about making a non-erasable error. Will probably need to order another fine-tip pen before the month is over – though I’m still not thrilled about how much bleed there seems to be on the bristol, even after switching papers. I’ve been going back and refining some of the points and smaller details with a fine-tip ballpoint pen – though a micron is probably a better option.

As usual if you want to see these things as I finish them, along with whatever else I’m doing you can look here or here.

Inktober Day 7 & 9

Missed day 8, figure I can try to make up for it this weekend. Decided to go ahead and quickly color my most recent two drawings – mostly for some practice. Since I’m just importing an iPhone-quality photo of the original ink drawing into photoshop, the results are a little less polished – I don’t necessarily mind the end result. I’m pretty satisfied with the lighting/shadow on “Rex” in the second image – getting gradually more comfortable with the ink as the month goes on. Might color all of these once the month is up, we’ll see.

As usual if you want to see these things as I finish them, along with whatever else I’m doing you can look here or here.

“Inktober” Drawings

I’ve been keeping up with “Inktober” this year. The idea is that you do a single pen & ink drawing every day of the month. I’ve decided to try and work a small narrative around my drawings – and it’s been fun, and challenging, so far – since I don’t have much experience with this sort of thing. I’m working on 6″ x 6″ 93 lb. paper with a good amount of texture to it – it’s been alright so far, though the small size can be limiting, and the texture/tooth of the paper shows more than I’d like in the final product. As for pens and ink I’ve been using a super fine felt tip Zebra pen, and the ever-popular Pentel pocket brush pen for the spot blacks.

I’ll probably post something like this again after the next 5 or so are done. If you want to see them as they’re finished, you can find them here each day.
